Overview
The Director of Programs & Evaluation oversees the Foundation’s programs, evaluation and organizational learning activities, including the implementation of the Foundation’s grantmaking strategies. As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Programs & Evaluation reports directly to the President & CEO, and together with the Director of Finance & Administration and Human Resources Manager, she/he nurtures the Foundation as a learning organization, guides the staff, and positions the Foundation as a nimble grantmaker accountable to the communities that it serves.
Nature and Scope of Position
- This is a full-time, exempt position, requiring workweeks in excess of 40 hours and frequent travel.
- The Director of Programs & Evaluation is responsible for directing and overseeing the work and priorities of the Programs & Evaluation Team, including staff development and measuring grants impact and outcomes.
- The Director of Programs & Evaluation collaborates closely with other members of the Leadership Team, and cultivates the integration of work within and across other work groups. She/he also works cooperatively with external consultants.
- The Director of Programs & Evaluation helps to shape and support the programmatic direction set by the President & CEO and ensures alignment and accountability within his/her work group with Foundation protocols.
- The Director of Programs & Evaluation represents the Foundation and upholds the highest ethical standards of integrity, fairness, and confidentiality as a colleague and grantmaker.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Assist the President & CEO in formulating and reviewing grantmaking goals, strategies, and protocols. Specifically, she/he is expected to:
- Ensure that the Foundation’s grants program is in compliance with all Board-approved policies and guidelines.
- Oversee, with the President & CEO, the fiscal management of the grants and administrative processes, as well as payment of the grants in compliance with federal and state tax regulations and Foundation requirements.
- Translate into action, with the President & CEO, the vision, mission and grantmaking goals set by the Board of Directors.
2. Develop and oversee administration of grant evaluation processes. Specifically, she/he is expected to:
- Manage internal procedures to assess and measure grant outcomes and outputs.
- Advise the President & CEO and staff on methods of program evaluation that is accountable to community.
3. Collaborate with the President & CEO to share lessons learned by the Foundation with the rest of the organization. Specifically, she/he is expected to:
- Coordinate site visits and other engagement opportunities for the Board and staff to learn from the work of the Foundation's grantees and key leaders in the field.
- Increase the Foundation's internal expertise through the staff's active participation in philanthropic circles and other collegial learning opportunities.
4. Assist the president & CEO in developing a knowledge management strategy and the cultivation of a learning organization. Specifically, she/he is expected to:
- Maintain positive, respectful, and transparent relationships with grantees, Board members, staff, and other constituencies.
- Provide regular written communication to the Board of Directors, through the president & CEO, keeping all Directors updated on the strategies and lessons learned from the work of the Foundation.
- Make presentations at public meetings and Foundation-sponsored events, and pen articles for publication about the work of the Foundation and its grantees, as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- Highly developed community service orientation, non-profit engagement, and awareness of race, class and poverty analysis.
- Familiarity with effective small and large scale advocacy, public policy and community mobilization efforts.
- Proven execution of best practices in philanthropy, especially in the areas of ethical and accountable protocols.
- Minimum of eight (8) years senior management roles and direct experience managing and monitoring a budget.
- Proven ability to lead and guide a multicultural workforce, including sensitivity and competency in working with individuals and groups of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, spiritual, and lifestyle backgrounds.
- Proven ability to create and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
Ability to work under pressure and stressful circumstances with grace and a positive, proactive, can-do attitude.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external audiences.
- Demonstrated experience in identifying and collaboratively resolving complex and sensitive situations in a fast-paced, rapid growth, and changing environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
- Demonstrated experience making presentations to diverse audiences, large and small.
- Graduate degree in Public Health, Education, Political Science, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a relevant discipline, with 10+ years experience in advocacy, program and policy development.
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to speak or understand another language/s in addition to English.
- Experience developing curriculum for programs in a variety of environments.
