equal voice: movement building

Sharing lessons learned in practice is crucial to creating an environment that will encourage discussion and advance the field. In this spirit, the Foundation offers a selection of reports, case studies, tools and essays from our staff as well as outside experts.

From Our President

Movement Building
Over the past eighteen months, the Marguerite Casey Foundation has spent a good deal of time engaged in conversation with people in low-income communities. We convened a series of Listening Circles across the country and invited not only local “experts” but also parents and youth. When we asked their advice on how they would spend $30 million dollars a year to benefit low-income families, they thought hard and spoke from the heart.

Building Movement Project is designed to explore and challenge (1) the current assumptions and expectations of how US-based social change nonprofit organizations should operate, and (2) their impact on building larger movements for change. Click here for more information about Movement Building.

The Community Organizing Toolkit is a set of resources that support face-to-face training for residents and community leaders. The computer-based component (the "Organizing Game") is used to introduce concepts, prompt discussion, and allow residents to practice skills in a safe, non-threatening environment. The initial focus of the Toolkit is Doorknocking, an organizing technique that's particularly effective in moving issues within a local community.
